Peri apical cysts

Peri apical cysts

A periapical cyst, also known as a radicular cyst, is the most common odontogenic cyst associated with the root apex of a non-vital tooth. It arises as a result of chronic inflammation following pulp necrosis and is often detected incidentally on radiographic examinations.

Clinical Presentation :
  • Often asymptomatic and discovered on routine dental X-rays.
  • May present with mild swelling, tenderness, or fluctuant mass near the affected tooth.
  • Infected cysts can lead to pain, pus drainage, and possible fistula formation.
  • Tooth associated with the cyst is non-vital.

Periapical cysts are common odontogenic lesions resulting from chronic periapical infections. While many cases are asymptomatic, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment—whether through endodontic therapy or surgical intervention—are essential to prevent complications and preserve oral health.
