Radicular cysts

Radicular cysts

Radicular cysts, also known as periapical cysts, are the most common odontogenic cysts. They develop at the apex of a non-vital tooth as a result of chronic pulpal infection and inflammation. These cysts arise from the epithelial cell rests of Malassez following long-standing periapical periodontitis.

Complications :
  • Expansion of the cyst can lead to bone resorption and jaw weakening.
  • Secondary infection causing abscess formation.
  • Recurrence if incomplete removal or reinfection occurs.

Radicular cysts are a common consequence of chronic periapical infections. Early diagnosis through clinical and radiographic examination, followed by appropriate endodontic or surgical management, ensures successful resolution and preservation of oral health.
